Cass County WELCOME to Cass County, Illinois

Cass County, Illinois--home of Arenzville, Ashland, Beardstown, Chandlerville, and Virginia, welcomes you to our website, which is designed to share our history, as well as promote what is happening in each community.

Cass County is located in west central Illinois. The western line of Cass County borders the Illinois River. Cass County was named after Lewis Cass, a soldier, later promoted to general who served during the war of 1812. He was a statesman, territorial Governor of Michigan, minister to France, United States Senator from Michigan, Secretary of War under Jackson, Secretary of State under Buchanan, and at one time a prominent candidate for the Presidency.

Cass County was formed from the northern part of Morgan County in 1837, including an approximate three-mile stip of land. Aside from being a part of Morgan County, Cass County was previously a part of St. Clair County, then a part of Madison County. Once Illinois became a state, we were a part of Sangamon County.

Cass County, Illinois consists of the Village of Arenzville, the Village of Ashland, the Village of Chandlerville, Beardstown, and Virginia. Townships include Arenzville, Ashland, Bluff Springs, Chandlerville, Hagener, Panther Creek, Philadelphia, Sangamon Valley, and Virginia.
